Differentiation with Technology

To effectively teach 3rd grade students about fractions, incorporating a variety of technologies can help accommodate different learning styles, foster engagement, and support deeper understanding. Display visual fraction models (like pie charts or bar models) and demonstrate fraction games or videos. This allows for hands-on manipulation of digital objects (e.g., dragging parts of a whole), helping students visually grasp the concept of parts of a whole and equivalent fractions. Display and model how to use physical fraction manipulatives (e.g., fraction tiles, circles) to the whole class. To help bridge concrete and visual learning, students can also share their work with the class for peer learning. Conduct formative assessments through quizzes or interactive games. By providing formative assessment, it offers instant feedback and identifies students' understanding gaps. When teaching 3rd graders about understanding fractions, integrating technology can enhance engagement and deepen understanding. First, it is important to establish clear expectations and guidelines for use. Provide training and support for both students and teachers. Maintain active supervision and monitoring. Align technology use with learning objectives. Encourage digital citizenship and responsible behavior. Evaluate and adjust technology integration based on feedback and outcomes. When teaching 3rd grade fractions, promoting global awareness and diverse cultural perspectives may not seem obvious at first—but there are meaningful and age-appropriate ways to connect math learning to the broader world. Some platforms offer games or storylines set in different countries or include diverse characters and foods (e.g., dividing sushi, tortillas, or naan bread). Helps students see that fractions apply in everyday life everywhere, not just in their own culture. Encourages curiosity about how people in different cultures use fractions in cooking, shopping, or building. For example, choose games that include multicultural content or pair a game with a discussion about the food or object being divided.
